This is a 4x5 portrait of the Krewe of Eris band. It is the first 4x5 portrait I did. The camera shifted a little bit since it was on a cheap tripod and I cut some people off and didn't get the negative space around the group I wanted, so Ill just have to get it right next year.

Reading Neruda in Bowling Green

I stayed in Bowling Green for the night and wound up reading "Twenty Love Poems and a Song of Despair" by Pablo Neruda with two other friends in a dark house. Here is a picture I took before I left New Orleans in the Spring. I was learning to use a loaned view camera with a medium format back and it is of two of my favorite people in the city.

I am back in Kentucky for the moment. My father has taken to going on long bicycle rides every night. So tonight I went with him to see what it was all about. It was fun seeing the town at night. There is a certain quality that dark, empty streets have when you are moving about them in near silence that is really incredible.

Hiawassee, Georgia

These are both sets of pictures taken in Hiawassee Georgia, two at Shane's family reunion and two at the Georgia Mountain Fair. For a good part of the trip this was our main destination. Getting to Shane's family reunion, and on time, was more on our minds than getting to the east coast. Riding 80 miles one day and 50 another, sometimes even 30 miles and occasionally just taking a rest day, our decisions about direction and time could have been considered whimsical but somehow we made it to Hiawassee. We not only made it but we made it on the first night of the family reunion just half an hour after dinner was served. It was quite amazing how it all worked out.

She wanted pictures that documented the "collars" she built in a class at Penland School of Crafts. We played around with different environments and light setups in Oakland and these were three of my favorite pictures.

Things thrown away were a common theme in our travels. On several occasions we made camp in an abandoned homestead. When strapped for cash or just looking to be frugal we would look to grocery store dumpsters for freshly disposed food. Litter along the road is much easier thought about when bicycling as opposed to driving. I feel like so much can be learned about people by what they leave behind. By what isn't worth keeping, worth finishing or has simply lost its worth to time.

One night we camped under almond trees in California. There was an abandoned pool and mansion there that were clearly let fall to waste when a larger farmer bought the almond grove. In Tennessee we explored a house that was left empty and half built for at least a decade when the owner went to prison, there were even paintings in the house that were left half finished with paint cans half empty. Some people have taken to recycling, others just let their waste slowly succumb to nature's will. In Kansas I found mountains of pallets that were in a backyard next to the giant beef slaughter houses in Dodge City. What were these places supposed to be like and what can we learn from the absence of those who once cared enough or not enough when they created them?

Here are scenes that made me wonder about how they came to be like this and who made them that way. I suppose they are really more curiosities than mysteries. Thats what I lot of this work has become to me - simple curiosity.

Desert Scale

The desert is a magnificent place because scale is so often inconceivable, everything is sparse, especially things made by man and the sounds that come along with those things. In some parts of the Mojave I would stop and place my bike next to the road. There would be no sound save my own breath and the rustling of my feet. Sounds would return when when Shane and Elspeth would begin to get closer and I could hear the noises of their bicycles. Mountains 30 miles away would appear easily approached afoot and trains could be heard through the silence but only appear as little glimmering boxes in the vast landscape. Sometimes stars would become nauseating. The few things that humans have build are startling in their presence because they are almost always obtrusive to the landscape and built solely for function.

We stayed in a rest area one night in a small town called Trona. The town was basically the infrastructure for a potash plant and its workers. The smell was horrible and there were sounds of explosions all night but the place was somehow beautiful.

Journey to the Summit

We were in the Great Sand Dunes National Park with hundreds and hundreds of tourists. Approaching the dunes we could see that many of the sight seers were trying to make their way to the peak of the highest dune at the front of the range. Why is it that it seems so natural for people to try and reach the top? Why do we challenge ourselves to these meaningless tasks and where on the journey do they gain meaning?

We were among the masses plodding through the sand, one step at a time, to reach the summit and it did, indeed, feel good to reach it.

The Life in Things

This summer I have found a lot of joy in searching for the life of things. I realized that something I really admired about my travel companion, Shane Darwent's photos was the questions they asked. Traveling with him made me look at things with a curiosity about the intentions of the people who constructed the landscapes and objects I was photographing. Some places that people leave behind tell so much more about them than a portrait would ever give.

These are two pictures of one grave in South Eastern Colorado that really struck me. I felt like I could really feel the love and intentions of the people who cared for this person without have a clue what they looked like or who they were.

I have been struggling with the idea that no one will ever care about my pictures as much as I do and the people who have a direct connection to the pictures I take.

There is a place in The Central Valley in California called Blackwell's Corner. It is a small general store with a soda fountain and aisle after aisle of shelves of almonds and pistachios of any named variety. When you leave the general store there is little more to look at than a dry place that was once a frontier called the American West. Blackwell's Corner was the last know stop for James Dean before he crashed his Porsche and died. The night before we camped next to another general store/restaurant that showed up as a town when seen on a road map. That place was called Cholame.

We had hoped to find a friendly house where we could pitch our tents on a small patch of grass in a vast desert. Instead I rode up to a green town sign that read "Cholame pop. 119." But there was no proof that the population was more than zero. There was an old cafe just up the road called The Jack Ranch Cafe and beyond that only more dry hills, rattle snakes and jack rabbits. They had a small patch of grass and a James Dean Memorial because after leaving Blackwell's Corner Dean crashed his car 400 yards down the road from the Jack Ranch Cafe in Cholame.

I found it pretty neat that James Dean lived a short life and became a fixed icon of American Spirit, but that he died next to a restaurant that was around long before he was even born and is still in business today. James Dean was a shooting star that burned out fast and brilliantly but I believe that American Spirit is more about tenacity and quietude. The ability for two small stops on a little travelled highway to weather over a century of life. They weathered in the same place where Steinbeck's family inspired The Grapes of Wrath, and through the assassination of great leaders, through World Wars and revolutions of equality - through history.

Riding a bicycle through these places gives them so much perspective. Often it felt like being a cowboy on horseback. We were vulnerable, self contained, just trying to find a place to sleep at night, food to eat and water to drink. The only other thing we had to have was curiosity and wander about the world around.

After experiencing these places the way I have and feeling history in the present I look at my pictures and truly care about them. I love them because they are of places holy and one day ancient. Places that our lives affected forever and that affect our lives forever, just as they did those who came before and those who will proceed us.

I was excitedly posting pictures as I scanned and spot toned them from this trip and now have taken them all down so that I can post more slowly and with introspection and writing that will let you know how much they mean to me and hopefully allow you to view them more deeply.

While in Asheville a friend showed me this slide that was destroyed in a hurricane and belonged to her grandfather, I thought it was really beautiful. I got to scan the slide at Penland School of Crafts where I also did this portrait for resident artist Amy Tavern. I will only be on the road for a few more days then comes life again.

After we spoke I showed the kids how to use my camera then they all got a chance to take pictures of their friends. The Nature of Things

For the first time in my life I live in a city, or rather a place where the countryside is more than a few minutes drive. It has made me think a lot about the photographs I have taken in nature and of nature and the power that those kinds of photographs hold.
I have talked to several photojournalist friends who tell me that they have trouble connecting to nature photographs. It is completely understandable that a picture of a distant mountain range can seldom grasp and hold our attention that the way a person’s eyes staring back through a picture can do so.
When you see a picture of another person you have an immediate and intimate relationship to them. The picture in front of you is no longer a stranger but is a picture of you. No matter how exotic or striking the countenance, it cannot be that different, at least anatomically, from yours. The biggest difference is the story that it holds. We grow close to a photograph not by immediate understanding, but by measuring the differences we have with that “other” person. It is not through similarities that we learn and become less ignorant to ideas and peoples, but through separation. It only makes sense that with more separation there would be an easy of measurement and a desire to explore deeper.
I would say that most people who have learned the rules of composition and the nature of light can take a beautiful nature photograph, but to take one that makes us go deeper is a different task all-together. I think that we live in a world that constantly separates people from nature. Spending too much time under fluorescent lights makes me long for and sometimes even begin to forget about the feeling that I had many years ago, the first time I was lost in some Kentucky river bottom and became caught in a briar patch while trying to find my way back to a familiar field or creek that would guide me in the right direction. I have taken a lot of nature photographs in the few years that I have been roaming around with a camera but few of them would ever make a “portfolio edit.” In fact, right now I can only think of three I even like very much.
All this rambling is getting at is that I don’t know what makes me like one over another, other than the way it makes me feel. And it is that same feeling I felt when I was young, that mystified and terrified me in that helpless and beautiful situation, that I am still looking for when I edit through pictures without people. Pictures with which I wish to measure the distance between myself and our world beyond walls.

Yesterday was crazy. I spent the afternoon riding the back of a hay wagon stacking bales (spelling?) then when a big storm came up we huridly tried to get the wagons secure and back to the barn. It turned out crazy, with one wagon rolling down the hill and all of us throwing hay bales in the rain and getting soaked.

One of the first assignments many students get at WKU is to photograph an egg. However, I had Mr. Kenney and he did not give that assignment. I decided to revist it though.

But seriously, most people think eggs are all shaped the same and are perfectly white. However, eggs that are layed by healthy chickens that havent been genetically altered are different. I collect eggs every other day on the farm and have gotten to know which chickens are laying which eggs.

I am doing a lot of weeding lately and I love the way plants looks roots and all so I am trying to play around with that. This is a lambs quarter, it is commonly pulled and thrown out as a weed but tastes just like spinach - there is so much of it that it seems silly that people even pay for spinach.

Farewell

There have been three interns since I arrived at Stony Creek Farm: Alyssa, a Syracuse University Industrial Design Student from Dallas; Mike, a 38-year-old who is working on different homestead farms in hopes of buying his own plot of land and starting a homestead of his own; and myself.

Mike has been here since March and knows more about the farm than Alyssa and I could even hope to. Tomorrow is Mike's last day at the farm. He is leaving to learn to use draft horses to work the land. He has taught us a lot in the week and a half I've been here including how to make keffir and is leaving some of his grains and his pepper plants (the seeds of which haven't been cultivated since the 1930s. Its going to be a lot more work and a greater learning curve without Mike but it was great having him around.

Stony Creek Farm

So I haven't updated in a few days because I started working at Stony Creek Farm in Walton, NY a week ago. The farm is run by Kate and Dan Marsiglio, a young couple in their 30s who started it as a homestead 6 years ago. I have already learned more from them and their two kids Isaac, 1, and Lucia (pronounced Loochia), 4, than I had expected to learn all summer. This is a beautiful place and and I hope my pictures will eventually show that.

I haven't been taking a lot of pictures yet because I've been getting in the flow of working but my days usually start around 6:45 with chores - letting the chickens out and feeding and giving water to them and the pigs as well as checking the sheep and moving them. Then I spend a few hours in the garden, then after lunch I work on whatever projects need done around the farm - which could be anything from building to butchering to catching roosters to baking bread to learning about lacto fermentation which means making kimchee and sour kraut or even one of my long term projects of building a non-invasive dam and getting hydro power from the creek (kate and dan's house is already run on solar but it would be nice to have a little more juice).

Anyway, Ill have more photos, photos all summer. But for now just these few.

I just spent a few days in North Carolina, between Penland School of Crafts visiting Marianne and a few days in a hostel in Asheville. It was a beautiful few days. This thing is purely a journal entry. I am not trying to tell the story really well or give it a beginning and a solid end. Only trying to express how I feel. Hope you enjoy it.

A glimpse from the past...

I went to a Montessori school in seventh and eight grade. There were all ages of kids there. The younger kids were just placed there by parents who hoped that their children would be geniuses, so they put them somewhere to expand their brains in elementary school. The middle schoolers were mostly kids who were too socially inept to handle public schools, so they took haven in a smaller place where their parents could pick them up or they could run away if they were getting picked on. And the high school kids were mostly kids that carried over from the middle school or had been kicked out of all the public high schools. It made for an interesting crowd.

I remember a feeling of terror from the play ground there when i was one of the middle school crowd. It was particularly in regard to the basketball games. The kids from my age up would get into teams and play 21. A no foul game that could get pretty rough. One kid, Rhino we called him, was one of the ones that seemed like a mix between the socially inept and the behaviorally dysfunctional high schoolers. Rhino would bring broken pencils onto the court, a parking lot, gated from the road to protect us from cars - but not Rhino.

The teams would be chosen and I would try and avoid playing, I preferred to observe. But sometime the other kids would convince me to play. I came in terrified. Terrified of missing the one shot where I was finally passed the ball. Terrified of tripping or not running fast enough. But mostly terrified of the pencils. Rhino would play a rough game. He was huge, but mostly just fat. And when the scoring wasn't going his way the pencils would come out of his dark blue shirt pocket and fly around the court as weapons to make sure no one could stop him from scoring. It was absolutely horrifying. Being the over-analytical kid that I was, I feared for my life. What if the pencil was to go into a vital organ just so that Rhino could make a three-point shot?

Going into those games was always a weird feeling. The kind where your heart seems to get pushed up to your throat and your lungs don't seem to function beyond their purpose - they only methodically push your heart a little higher with each breath.

Bike Ride

I think my favorite thing to do in Owensboro is just ride my bike around. These are from riding around yesterday. The last one is fireflies on my way home. It was a magical evening.

Ohio is always lovely. The Avett Brothers in concert were amazing. Now I am getting ready to go back to Owensboro and spend time with my family. Hopefuly, I can post some pictures of my family soon. Peace kids.

The American Diversity Project took place this year in Pikeville, Ky. We had a really talented crew of photographers come out and a lot of obstacles to overcome. Pikeville is probably the most economically diverse region in Eastern Kentucky but still, when photographers come, all they document is the poverty. But that is only half the story. Because so many of the wealthy people in Pikeville came from poverty they have a really strong respect for all people and the classes aren't greatly divided; mansions stand next to dilapidated trailers. I think we did a good job of showing this in our pictures and mutimedia. The site is up right now with the first few galleries and the multimedia should be up May 25th.

Here is one of my fashion pictures from a shoot i did yesterday. The others should be on up soon. I owe a huge thank you to Kohl Threlkeld and Gary Emord-Netzley because they helped me with pocket wizards and problem solving when things didn't work the way I had planned. The other two are going to be from a movie theater theme. Ill post them tonight.

My portrait for class this week was a lot of fun. We had to shoot a performer and shoot them in the studio. I asked Dustin Hamman to come and do it, he is a musician from Portland, OR who is playing with his band, Run on Sentence, at Bread and Bagel tomorow night. Neither of us liked cliche band pictures so instead of shooting for that, I asked him to express himself with paint on the blue paper in the studio. This is what we came out with.

My cousins and I hung out at my grandparent's house tonight for a few hours. My grandparents have lived in the same house since my Dad was young. This is a photo of them in their bedroom in that same house, tonight.

Mammoth Cave

I got up really early this morning to shoot some pictures in the old growth forest in Mammoth Cave National Park. Because of the high water in the Green River the ferry was closed so I couldn't make it into the old growth forest. I made this picture since the original plan didn't work out. I think it's one of my favorite pictures from this semester.
